The Yankees won their fifth straight game today and appear to be crushing the ball with some authority again. Now I will admit the Yankees are suppose to beat on the Jays, its the whole last place first place thing, but major league pitching is still major league pitching and the Yankees are hitting and pitching better than they have been over the last couple of weeks. The last two in Detroit really seemed to be a wake up call and if the Yankees can just hold on to the six game lead they have in the division for the month of August they should be getting Pettitte and A-Rod back ready for the post season. Everyone is making a big deal about Sabathia going on the DL with a sore elbow. Truth be known this is not a new injury and he has been pitching with it for a while now. The Yankees have just decided to get it fixed up now so that he will be ready for the stretch run. A rested Sabathia and a rested Pettitte will be deadly in the post season. The Yankees also acquired Derek Lowe today who could very well be just a fill in for the rotation until Sabathia returns on August 24th when the Bombers are in Cleveland.  Lowe is 39 and not having a good time of it since being 6-1 on June first with an ERA under 4  he has been horrible and now holds a 8-10 record with an era over 5 in 111 innings with Cleveland. Lowe has agreed to pitch out of the bullpen and is still getting ground ball outs at a rate of 60%. Maybe they start him maybe they don’t. Maybe they start Phelps, However he hasn’t thrown more than 36 pitches in a game since his last minor league start back on July 14th when he threw 103. My guess is Lowe starts on Monday. He is already  stretched out and with some offence to support him the change of scenery might be just what he needs.

In other news Derek Jeter has become the second player in baseball history to have 150 or more hits in 17 straight seasons, The other being Hank Arron. Seems like all of Jeter’s records are among names like Arron, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio. See previous article or I might go on another bender on how great Jeter really is. I feel truly blessed to be able to have seen him play his entire career.  Tomorrow  the Yankees hope to bring out the brooms and finish off the Blue Jays as Phil Hughes will be on the mound hoping to get win number 12 out of the way before the Rangers come to the Bronx on Monday.
