Phil-HughesThis one had it all right from the start. CC Sabathia scrapped his way through six innings giving up 10 hits but striking out ten Red Sox in the Yankees 5-2 victory . Sabathia who had been 0-4 against the Sox was itching to get that, he cant beat the Red Sox, monkey off his back. Eric Chavez had a big night going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. A RBI was also added by Robinson Cano and the Only long ball of the game was issued by Francisco Cervelli, who has proven to be a Red Sox killer with a .538 BA against them. As Cervelli crossed the plate he clapped his hands together which apparently angered the Red Sox as they hit him intentionally on the very next pitch he saw. This cleared the bull-pens and got Larry Rothchild ejected and a few choice words from Joe Girardi. This is exactly what this rivalry needed , a spark. The Yankees vs. Red Sox used to be one of the most heated rivalries in all of sports, but has gotten soft in recent years. Perhaps Cervelli has relight the flame. We will find out tonight when these two face off again with first place on the line. Tonight John Beckett will take the mound for the Sox against Phil Hughes who has been Jekyll and Hyde since coming off the DL. In his last start Hughes didn’t make it out of the second inning and left on the losing side of a 7-1 score. Then the Yankees bats came alive scoring scoring 21 more runs in the 22-9 victory. Tonight the Yankees are hoping for the Hughes that pitched in the previous four starts when he was 3-1 with an ERA of 1.75. Beckett has been a Yankees killer in his own regard with a record of 3-0 this season against them. Game time tonight is 7pm pregame at 6:30pm.
