Everyone keeps talking about how the Yankees are in a mini hitting slump. Does it really matter? Besides a horrific road trip to Detroit which has forced them to share first place with the Rays the Yankees have been wining pretty consistently.  They took two out of three from the Rangers and have won two straight including a 3-1 victory over the Royal last night. What is different about this team is that they are getting good starting pitching. Sabathia has an Era of 2.89 Burnett 3.71 Nova 4.08 Garcia 2.61 and Colon 3.86. If being around or under four is the landmark than I would say having two pitchers with an ERA under three is amazing. Speaking of amazing did anyone think David Robertson would be as dominant as he has been after such an awful spring. He came in last night and wiggled out of a bases loaded jam with two strikeouts saving the win for Garcia. He has struck out 18 batters over 13 innings with an ERA of 1.35, the kid is only 26 years old and is on the verge of being considered one of the elite relievers in baseball. In other news Phil Hughes is scheduled to throw from flat ground this week . If this goes well he may get the go ahead to start some more vigorous throwing which will equate to him starting spring training all over again to see if he can build up his arm strength enough to gain the velocity he needs on his fastball not to be treated like he’s throwing BP. Rafael Soriano was unavailable last night after reporting some tenderness in his elbow. Soriano will have a precautionary MRI today just to make sure that everything is ok. I’ll report on this later as soon as I hear an update. Speaking of relievers has anyone noticed that the old Joba Chamberlain is back. Last night he struck out Alex Gordon on a 98 mph fastball that he just looked at. He is consistently hitting in the upper 90’s and is blowing batters away with it and making them look silly with his biting slider.

Tonight AJ Burnett will take the mound in an attempt to build on his solid pitching performance last time out when he took the loss but pitched into the eighth inning. He will opposed by Vin Mazzaro who will be making his Royals debut after playing with the Athletics last season to a record of 6-8 over 122 innings with an ERA of 4.72. As a team the Yankees have a 400 BA against Mazzaro with a total of 6 HR against. Two of which belong to Mark Texieria who holds a .500 average against him with 6 RBIs. There are six Yankees actually who have batted .500 against him. Unless he has reinvented himself since his days in Oakland look for the Yankees to score some runs tonight. The Rookstradomous prediction is Yankees 7 Royals 3.
