Continuing with our comparison series lets take a look at Left field. Brett Gardner vs Carl Crawford. At first glance this is no contest and yes your initial thought is correct that they Red Sox are going to win this one hands down. However you will see during this comparison that just because the Red Sox have the better Left fielder doesn’t mean that the Yankees don’t have a good one.
Brett Gardner– His numbers don’t stand out as greatness. 5 HR and .247 47 RBI’s don’t scream superstar and he isn’t yet. Yet is the key word, Gardner is 27 years old and is getting better each season. Brett is by far the fastest member of the Yankees and his 47 stolen bases last season gives pitchers nightmares. Whenever he is on base ,which he was at a pretty good clip last season ( .383 OBP), he forced pitchers to pay attention to him. I would not be surprised to see him take over the lead off spot this season which will give him even more opportunity to steal, and with Jeter batting behind him he probably will see an increase in his runs scored.
Carl Crawford– Ok Ok there is really no comparison here as Crawford does it all. His numbers last season and every season have been amazing. In eight years in the Majors he has batted over .300 five times and holds a career average of .296. Carl also hits for power with double digit HR in five seasons including a career high 19 in 2010. Lets not even talk about Carl Crawford’s speed he has 409 career stolen bases and has 40 or more in seven of nine seasons in the MLB. Getting Crawford was a great move by the Red Sox. Not so great for Mike Cameron who will now be a fourth outfielder. The Red Sox havent had a legit outfield sence Manny Ramirez was in his prime.
Advantage – Red Sox
