The Yankees are looking at free agent Catcher Russell Martin from the Dodgers as part of a catching tandem that also includes Fransisco Cervelli and Jesus Montero. The Yankees are prepared to go into the season with Montero as the primary candidate for the starting catching job but adding Martin would certainly give the Yankees some options and add another talented young catcher to the spring training competition. Martin is a former all-star that has battled injury the last couple of seasons. In 2007 he batted .293 with 19 HR and stole 21 bases. There aren’t many catchers in the game who can also steal bases and at 27 years old there is no reason to believe that if healthy he can’t return to form. The fact that the Yankees are even looking at catchers says to me that they are committed to using Posada as the DH full-time. I believe that Martin would also give the Yankees a viable option at catcher should they lose out on the Cliff Lee sweepstakes and be forced to trade Montero as part of a package for a different front line starter such as Zack Grienke.
