In an odd game that saw the Yankees blow a lead late tie it and then win on a walk off bases loaded walk in the tenth the big news was Hughes. Nothing more to say about him except, Solid! He pitched six innings of three hit baseball only giving up one earned run and striking out four. You cant ask your number four guy to do any better than that. This is the first game ever where Rivera and Paplebon both blew ninth inning leads that I can remember. Alex Rodgieguez hit another HR putting his historic number to 611 and 29 on the season. In case you didn’t know Alex passed Sammy Sosa and moved into sixth on the all time HR list. Next up is Ken Griffey JR who has 630. He will almost certainly pass him next year and probably Willie Mays the year after that. Then it gets a lot harder once he is at 660 He will need either a monster year or two years to pass the Babe. My guess at his career total is 790 but that’s a debate for another time for sure.
The important thing tonight is that the Yanks one and the Rays lost, bringing the magic number down to one with six games left. Also it puts them back to a half game out of the Division lead and keeps their hopes of home field advantage alive. Toronto is up next as Aj Burnett gets a tune up before the playoffs tomorrow night. If he is good than the Yankees are definitely on the right path.
