After missing the playoffs in 2008 the Yankees did all the right things. In the off season the Bombers went out and got two front line starters in Sabathia and Burnett and a big time bat in Mark Teixeira to compliment their already potent offence. They decided to part way with a couple of their ageing veterans in Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu, they mixed and matched the young and the old and here we are. After putting up the Best record in baseball the ALDS. If there is an award for genius it should go to Brian Cashman who has built this new Yankees empire that seems to be a ghost of many of the great Championship teams that have dawned the pinstripes throughout history. But with all the things that have gone right this season the final chapter has not been reached.
It all comes down to this ,the playoffs , do or die time. The Twins are their opponent and everyone has to realize that these to teams records now are 0-0. The Yankees certainly are the favorite with many advantages. Home field advantage can be huge, They are certainly well rested as they clinched it all a week ago unlike the Twins that clinched it a few hours ago. But in the playoffs anything can happen.
So it all comes down to this, here are a look at the cast of characters in tonight’s opening act:
Pitching: LHP CC Sabathia (19-8, 3.37 regular season)
Pitching: LHP Brian Duensing (5-2, 3.64 ERA regular season)
TIME/TV: 6:07 p.m., TBS
The odds makers have the Yankees chance of winning tonight at 75% and in no small part due to the presence of CC Sabathia who has been brilliant all season. His last outing was rough but that I feel will make him better. He takes everything to heart and wants nothing more than to win. A great teammate, a great leader, a competitor to the end.
The Twins are tired and the atmosphere of the playoffs may be to much for them, but we will see.
Some other notes:
The Yankees announced they will use Jose Molina in game two to catch for AJ Burnett. Molina and Burnett work well together and chemistry is so important. This team has a ton of chemistry which is something that the 2008 version of the Yankees lacked.
Its very windy at the stadium sometimes gusting up to 40 mph hopefully this will help the bombers live up to their name and launch a few balls into the upper deck.
It all comes down to this and we at Yankees Online Magazine will be here every step of the way so make sure you follow along with us on twitter at username Yankeesmagazine.
