This game had it all , good pitching, great fielding and a dramatic finish. Chad Gaudin picked a great time to have his best performance of the year giving up 1 run on six hits over 6 innings and striking out 6. (Just noticed how demonic that sounds). For the Rays David Price was almost as good going 6 inning and only allowing 2 runs while striking out 6. His only mistakes were a solo HR to Swisher and an Rbi single to A-Rod that scored Mark Texieria. In the 7th inning after putting the first two batters on base Girardi mixed and matched using four pitchers to get out of the inning without allowing a run. In the 8th inning Phil Hughes gave up a game tying homer and nothing else. Mariano Rivera came in for a perfect ninth inning.( as usual) In the Bottom of the ninth Dan Wheeler came on in relief of Randy Choate and got A-Rod to ground out to short before Nick Swisher came to the plate and with one swing of the bat, hit his second home-run of the game (one from each side) earning his pie and the Yankees win.
Tomorrow the Yankees bring out the Brooms and go for their thousandth sweep of the year as Joba Chamberlain takes the mound. Its hard to say how many innings he will pitch in accordance with the new Joba rule but I am guessing he goes 4-5 innings . But who knows what the plan is. He will be pitching against Jeff Niemann who everyone tells me is great but I have yet to see him pitch. But his 12-5 record with an ERA under 4 says plenty about how good this guy is. Should be a good one. Don’t forget to follow us on twitter, username Yankeesmagazine.
