bradpenny The NY Yankees have expressed an interest in Brad Penny to fill the void in their current fifth starter role. Penny who was released by the Red Sox will clear release waivers on Monday and may sign with the team of his choice. The Yankees had placed a claim on Penny earlier in the month of August only to have Boston pull him back. The NY Post is reporting that many in the front office have spoken very highly of this possibility and even Johnny Damon liked what he saw from the Flame Throwing right hander. Penny’s fast ball has been touching as high as 97 on the gun and consistently sitting 93-94. A lot of his breaking stuff was getting hammered but he also had a string of bad luck as well.

Front office people with knowledge of the Yankees plans have stated that they do not know of any agreement between Penny and the Red Sox that would prohibit him from signing with an AL contender. I would have to agree that for 100,000 this would be a low risk move with a high upside. Think about it, could he really be worse than Sergio Mitre or Chad Gaudin? Is it me or does Penny look a bit like Larry the Cable Guy?
