Now that’s more like it, Good pitching, Timely hitting, and some clutch Defense. Put it all together and you get a 9-2 Victory for the best team in Baseball. The Yankees proved tonight why they are on top and why they deserve to be against the Tough Texas Rangers.
Yankees on the Mound: At the Beginning of the year I thought bringing Andy Pettitte back was a mistake. Boy was I wrong, he has been so great. Now I hope that he comes back next year. I think he will, seems he wants to. He certainly is pitching like he wants to. Tonight he went 7 strong innings allowing 2 ER on 5 Hits with 7 strikeouts. Brian Bruney came on in the 8th and although he struggled a bit after retiring the first hitter he allowed 2 hits and a walk to load the bases before getting Pudge Rodriguez to ground into his second double play of the night. This may sound silly but I always found that Pudge hits better when he is playing catcher he doesn’t really DH all that well. Bruney certainly has his velocity back as he was hitting 96 on the gun. One other thing that was promising was the fact that when he was missing he was missing down. When he is not right he tends to leave stuff hanging waist level in the middle to be easily tagged. Phil Coke came in for a 1.2.3. ninth ; He was hitting 96 on the gun as well. I guess I never noticed that Phil threw so hard.
Yankees at the Dish : The Yankees put up a three spot in the second inning when Posada hit his 17th Homer of the season off Derek Holland scoring Alex Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui. Jerry Hairston Jr hit a solo shot in the fourth his 10th of the year. Hairston had a great game going 1-2 and walked twice. He never wastes an at bat. Seems he was always going to 3-2, actually he saw 32 pitches on the night. Then in the 7th inning up 4-2 the Yankees decided to put the game away. The inning started with Cano pounding a sharp double to left and Hairston Jr walking. This got Holland pulled from the game. (he actually pitched better than his numbers) and that is when the trouble began for the Rangers . Jason Jennings looked more like John Rocker. Melky Cabrera came on and set down a real good bunt but Jennings booted it trying to get out of the way and suddenly the bases were loaded with nobody out. Derek Jeter did what he does best with a 2 RBI single followed by a double from Nick Swisher and a single from Mark Teixeira and suddenly it was 9-2. The Yankees on the night were great with runners in scoring position and the Rangers were not. I’ll say it time and time again that’s what wins ball games. Last season the Yankees had mostly the same line up but didn’t get it done with RISP this year they are the best in the League. Last year they didn’t make the playoffs. This year they will probably win the world series.
Yankees on Deck: It’s a quick turn around with a day game in about 14 hours from now. It will be AJ Burnett who will be hoping to right the ship after losing his last two starts vs Dustin Nippert who is 4-2 with an ERA less than 4. Like I said before this offence is just so good it seems when they lose its usually that they lose than that someone beat them. If AJ pitches like he is capable the Yankees will win and he will.
