Brett Tomko was recently released by the NY Yankees and in his debut start with the A’s pitched 5 innings of shut out baseball in Oakland’s 3-0 victory. Tomko says that payback wasn’t on his mind but you have to think he got just a little bit of satisfaction in defeating the team that so recently jilted him.
Yankees on the Mound:
AJ Burnett did what he does he pitched 8 innings on 6 hits and gave up 3 ER while striking out 5 along the way. On most days that’s good enough for the win but the Yankees offence didn’t have that swagger today and was unable to give him the support that he needed. You have to think that there was some kind of closed door meeting after getting shut out by such an awful team.
Yankees at the Dish:
0-6 with RISP is not often going to win you a game. Only 7 hits for the Yankees is also atypical for a team that is know as the Bronx Bombers. One thing that I like to say is “Another multi hit game for Jeter” I can’t even count how many times I have said that , unfortunately this time it didn’t add up to any runs. I’m also glad to have Ramiro Pena back as it seems that he makes a contribution every time he plays whether its with the bat or with his slick fielding,
Yankees on Deck:
Tomorrow the Bombers will face the Athletics for part two of this three part series and they do so with their best on the Mound. CC Sabathia (13-7) will square off against Vin Mazzaro (4-8). Mazzaro has won his last two outings and has only given up 5 earned between them, however he never cleared the 6th inning in either one of those events and they were against the Orioles and the Royals. Sabathia in his last two outings has pitched 15.2 innings and has only given up 1 ER ,against the Mariners and the Red Sox, two teams with winning records. As a team the Yankees are batting .400 against Mazzaro and their top three hitters are all batting .667 against him. It could be a long day for the A’s
Other Yankees Babble:
I don’t get into the draft signings to much. It’s just hard for me to watch so much money being thrown at unproven talents. Pete Abraham has some good stuff over on his blog. I Recommend you check it out. He obviously did his homework on the subject.
Brett Gardner seems to be healing well from his broken thumb and is expected to be back with the Yankees as soon as September 1st. Brett is one of those guys that drives opposing pitchers nuts whenever he is on the base pads. Good instincts and blinding speed are a dangerous combination. To bad he doesn’t hit like Ichiro.
Jorge Posada turned 38 today. happy birthday to him he went 1 for 4 and struck out twice. Probably not what he wished for when he blew out the candles.
The Red Sox were idle today, so with the Yankees loss they only pick up a half game. NY now has a 7 game lead in the division. In most divisions that is a comfortable lead. In the AL East I need at least 9 before I put my guard down. however it was a bad day for the Red Sox to be off as the Rangers one their contest extending their lead to a whole game over Boston and 4 ahead of the Rays for the wildcard.
That’s it for tonight Tomorrow we will have our player of the week, a look at our newly drafted bombers and pre game babble. Sleep well my pretties and make sure you follow us on twitter at username YankeesMagazine.
