Na matter how bad the Marlins are you can’t take anything away from the fact that Josh Johnson can pitch. The 25 year old righty went 7 strong innings for the minnows striking out 5 and only giving up 1 run on 3 hits.
AJ Burnett matched him going 6 strong giving up only 1 earned run as well. The story of this game was the misplayed ball by Johnny Damon that cost the Yankees an unearned run and the 2-1 loss. But ya know what, If Burnett continues to pitch like he has been he will win a lot more games than he will lose. He struck out 8 Minnows and had a filthy late breaking curve ball that kept the hitters looking silly. The Yankees bull pen still continued to impress giving the Yankees a chance to pull one out against an inferior pen.
The lighting in the stadium is designed for football and sometimes balls like the one Damon lost in them happens. Unfortunately that’s baseball. You cant be to upset about tonight’s loss. I saw some great pitching, A couple of great throws from Jorge Posada, and some great work from Phil Coke and Phil Hughes out of the pen.
Tomorrow it will be CC Sabathia vs Chris Volstad
Volstad is 4-7 with a 4.75 ERA and has loss his last two decisions only pitching a total of 8 innings between them. Sabathia is 6-4 with an ERA of 3.67 is 1-1 in his last two starts and has a total of 7.2 innings between them. Say what you will about the national league but Sabathia was absolutely Dominate last season for the NL west Brewers. As a team the Marlins are batting .172 against CC and the Yankees have no record against Chris except for Mark Teixeira who is 2 for 2 against him with an RBI. This being said you have to like the Bombers chances of pulling out a series victory before traveling to Atlanta on Monday for a set against the NL east Braves starting on Tuesday.
Josh Beckett shut out the Braves 3-0 today so the Yanks Drop to three games back in the division and still holding on to a narrow .5 game lead over the Angels for the wildcard. Tomorrow it will be Jair Jurrjens for the braves with an ERA of 2.89 vs Tim Wakefield for the sox his ERA being 4.39 with a record of 8-3. I like the Braves chances tomorrow although Wake is 8-3 he is definitely hittable if that knuckler isn’t breaking. Hopefully by days end Yankees will be back to 2 games out with a 1 game lead in the wildcard.
Happy Fathers day everyone we will be back with lineups tomorrow afternoon game time is at 5:05. Remember to follow us on twitter username yankeesmagazine which also will feed to the site during the game.
