It’s hard to believe that their were sports writers out there that predicted the Yankees finishing third this season behind the Red Sox and the Rays. Now it would seem that they are on a winning streak that just might not end. At this point im putting them down for 115 wins. Yes this seems very optimistic but I think they are that good. After winning 15 of their last 19 games the brilliant minds over at ESPN finally have them ranked #2 and have dropped the Red Sox down to #4 with the Recently hot Rangers moving into the three spot.
Well the Rangers weren’t so hot tonight and Vincent Padilla didn’t have a memorable return from the DL lasting only 3.2 Innings and giving up 7 runs on 7 hits as the Yankees blew up the Rangers 12-3. Jorge Posada is my pick for player of the game going 4 for 5 with 4 RBI’s and a towering HR in the 6th inning that fell just short of the upper deck, which has yet to be reached in the new stadium. Previously the only shot that has been close came off the bat of Mark Texeria. Paul O’neil predicted during the games broadcast on the YES network that someone will reach it by the all-star break, and that he would have a shot in the old timers game if they let him use his golf club.Hideki Matsui also had a good night going 2 for four with a three run home run in the the fourth.
I also want to point out that Brett Gardner continues to impress me with the way that he plays tonight he went one for two with a walk and an RBI. he’s currently batting .270 which is more than anyone would have expected from him. I just like the way he plays the game, he’s got hustle. Aj Burnett went 7 innings striking out 8 and picked up his 4th victory of the season his second against the Rangers.
Mark Texeria went hitless but was hit by a pitch in the back that angered him and almost escalated into something but stopped at an exchange of words after manager Joe Girardi rushed out of the dugout to calm Mark down.
He got a little payback on with the next batter when he slid hard into second taking out Ian Kinsler to break up the double play and allow a run to score. But don’t think that there wont be more retaliation, I fully expect this not to be the end of what was obviously an intentional hit batsmen.
Tomorrow the Bombers are at it again as Andy Pettite will face the Rangers Scott Feldman.
Feldman is undefeated this season with a record of 4-0 in 10 games and an era of 3.91. Pettite is 5-1 in 10 starts with an era of 4.10. There is some concern about Pettite’s back after he was removed from his last start due to stiffness but apparently he is good to go. Not to worry if there is a problem the Yankees will have Chein Ming Wang ready in the bull pen who seems to be back to his old ways of getting out hitters via the ground ball.
