pjCurrently the Yankees are a bit thin in the catching department. With Jorge Posada and Jose’ Molina both on the DL the job belongs to Francisco Cervelli and backing him up is Kevin Cash.

The part of this that I don’t like is Kevin Cash as the back up. I believe that the Yankees better option is PJ Pilittere.  Cash is 31 with a decent arm and defense but he doesn’t hit. When I say he doesn’t hit I mean not at all. He has a career average of .184.

Pilittere is 25 and is fairly average in most category’s. He certainly hits a ton more than Cash. Admittedly Cash probably has a slightly better arm but where PJ excels is his game calling. He is probably the smartest catcher in the organization and everyone who has ever pitched to him says he calls a great game. PJ does his homework and is always prepared. Granted these are things that don’t show up in the stats, but stats are just stats. Having good stats is not going to win games. Currently PJ is batting .289 with Scranton after 13 games. Last year he was selected as an EAS mid-season all-star.

Pilittere probably doesn’t have as high of a ceiling as Jesus Montero or Cervelli but right now he is certainly a better choice as your back-up catcher than Kevin cant hit Cash.
