This will be the only time those words will ever be spoken. As Gardner went 127 AB’s last season without a HR. Today he cracked the second pitch he saw leading off the game over the wall.

This HR had special signifigance for Brett as it was the first game that his son Hunter has ever attended. Granted At 3 months old it will not be one he will remember but it will certainly be a story that he will be able to tell him in the years to come.

Brett Tomko pitched 2 shut out innings for the Bombers and looked better than I thought he would. If the 11 year veteran continues down this path I would give him a better than 50/50 shot of making the team as a long reliever.

Girardi plans on Joba making 30 starts this season , which is certainly more than I anticipated. I imagine this would put him around 170ish innings for the year. If he’s able to do so don’t expect to see him setting up for Mariano . My guess is Veras will be the 8th inning guy but I would love to see Melancon win the job. Veras ran into a little trouble today loading the bases twice but don’t look to much into it, it’s the first day.

Tommarow the Yankees take on the Devil Rays.  Phil Hughes , Phil Coke, Brian Bruney, Damaso Marte, Jon Albaladejo, Mark Melancon will be ptiching for the Yankees and Posada is scheduled to DH. (he probably won’t play behind the plate till mid March) Back in the Am with line-ups.

Don’t expect Brett, who went 1-3 today to have many more HR this year but its always nice to start out on a high note. The other Homer was a 2 run shot by A-rod whom I suspect will hold the lead all to himself in a matter of days perhaps tomorrow.
