23 year old Mark Melancon is already being praised as the future closer of the New York Yankees. Mark is excited that people are throwing that out there but knows it isn’t true until he makes it true.

Mark was originally drafted 30th by the Dodgers in 2003 but went to college at the University of Arizona instead. In 2006 the Yankees him in the Ninth round after his stock dropped fearing he would need elbow surgery. After just 7 minor leauge appearance and 4 in the Hawaiian league he had to be shut down due to elbow problems. Melancon underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2007 season.

After quickly making his way up the ranks in 2008 he has come to spring training to impress. Melancon features a mid 90’s fastball , a mid 80’s curve-ball, a newly developed change up and a no fear demeanor that makes him one tough customer.  Pitching Batting practice yesterday Mark faced Jeter,Cano,Jackson and Romaine.  He threw 30 pitches making Jeter swing and miss three times and breaking one of Canos bats.

“It was impressive” said Jorge Posada ” Those guys were not comfortable facing him”   Mark has come to spring training hoping to win a spot in the bullpen. The Yankees plan on taking it slow with him so AAA is his most likely landing spot. But Edwar Ramirezmarkwas shut down on Sunday with Hamstring soreness. If it turns out that he is going to miss time Mark might get a closer look.

Update: Ramirez actual has a mild case of bursitis and should be throwing again in a couple of days
