The home runs keep coming for Nick Swisher who connected twice for the long ball last night giving him 18 for the year. Add another one for Russell Martin and number 31 for Curtis Granderson. But the biggest hit of the day came off the bat of Derek Jeter who with one swing of the bat put his name in the record book yet again becoming only the second player in the history of baseball to have 300o hits and 250 HR, 300 Stolen bases and 1200 RBI’s. Willie Mays is the only other to accomplish such a feat. Pretty good company eh? Jeter now has 16 seasons with 10 or more HR, and became the tenth Yankee to hit ten or more this season. The only other time the Yankees has ten players with ten or more homers was in 1998 and of course they won the WS that year. Jeters Bomb tied the game in the fifth and then another timely hit by Jason Nix gave them the lead which Swishers homer in the seventh put the final nail in the 6-4 victory. Soriano came in in the ninth and with a strikeout and two harmless pop ups nailed down his 30th save in 31 attempts.
Lets not give all the credit to the Yankee bats though. Phil Hughes who has been horrible against the Red Sox, actually against every one of late, pitched one hell of a game. Hughes (12-10) went seven innings giving up four runs all unearned. Phil threw 106 pitches 73 of them for strikes and even though he only had four K’s he shut down a potent Red Sox offence who is third in the league in runs scored.
